| Co-opportunity was founded in 1987 as a spin-off of El Hogar del Futuro, a nonprofit housing developer in Hartford. Co-opportunity’s original misión was to provide developers and residents the training necessary to ensure the success of shared ownership ventures, such as limited equity co-operatives. Since then, Co-Opportunity has trained over 900 families to own and manage cooperative housing complexes.
YouthBuild Hartford was created in 1997 to address the education and vocational needs of out-of-school youth. In 1999, Co-Opportunity decided to focus its housing efforts on first-time homebuyers and became certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide pre- and post-purchase, foreclosure prevention and rental counseling.
Co-opportunity was located on Murphy Road in Hartford for many years. In 2003, Co-opportunity moved to its current location in Veeder Place, site of the former Veeder Root factory.
